This is the imposing Aragonese castle that Hollywood directors adore
Perched on a rocky crag and offering breathtaking views, Loarre Castle is not only one of Aragon’s most impressive architectural treasures, but also a film set. Its majestic silhouette, impeccable preservation, and medieval atmosphere have captivated directors from all over the world, including those from Hollywood.
One of the best-known international productions filmed in this location is Kingdom of Heaven (2005), directed by Ridley Scott and starring Orlando Bloom. This blockbuster, set during the Crusades, found in Loarre Castle the perfect setting to recreate the spirit of the Middle Ages. But it is not the only one. Spanish cinema has also set its sights on this emblematic place, as demonstrated by Irati, a mythological film set in the 8th century and starring Itziar Ituño, who chose this setting to bring her most epic scenes to life.
And no wonder. The castle’s Romanesque architecture, its impregnable fortress, and the privileged natural setting in which it stands make it an ideal location for both the big screen and any visitor. From its towers and walls, you can admire an incomparable landscape: to the north, the peaks of the Aragonese Pyrenees; to the south, the vast plain of the Hoya de Huesca. A setting that seems taken from a legend.
